IT'S HURRICANE SEASON

The last few years we have been lucky. Lets hope 2015 is kind to us.

We just got back from New Orleans where our CERT Photographer took on an assignment, from our publisher, to photo-document the Hurricane disaster caused when KATRINA slammed New Orleans.

New Orleans was battered and many around the World, as well as here at home, wondered where was the help. Inside the borders of N.O. the answer was clear. It was the Citizen Volunteers, Neighbors, and the local Police and Fire that made up the First Responders. This was recognized by the Katrina Museum. They had many displays citing the work of these heros.

The model below is of a local man who was credited with saving several neighbors by getting them to high ground one at a time in a canoe. He stood tall - just an ordinary hero.

This battered flag was rescued and now is on display in this Museum. The doctors jacket below was also donated  after the damage caused by Katrina.

Above is a rescue basket used to lift people by helicopter. The boat below was commandeered for rescue duty and now is part of the exhibit.

After the storm first responders checked every home and marked them in various ways starting with a traditional "X".  The displays below show items that were saved and donated to the museum. Check out the big door with the red "X."

A diary of one man's days after the storm is posted in the museum along with his picture. We were moved to see that one of our NJ Police Departments (Trenton) provided the man with water as part of a volunteer effort. Sorry Captain about some language here,  but that was his feelings at the time, and is what you see in the real world during emergency situations. In fact this visit was a real learning experience.

Signs battered and destroyed were salvaged for this display. One item that the First Responders saved is also pictured below. The Piano of Fats Domino.

To our Neighbors and Friends - Be Safe this Hurricane Season.
